While surfing an Internet as usual and going through my Facebook account. I saw a post from an Accountability Lab saying “Award ceremony of an Integrity Idol Nepal 2014 is going to happen on 11th January 2015 at Nepal Tourism Board, Exhibition Road”. Integrity Idol “A citizen campaign which highlights and honor Nepal’s honest government officials and demonstrates the importance of honesty, personal responsibility and accountability, which will inspire a new generation to be an effective public servant”. I was following “Integrity Idol Nepal” Facebook page since a couple of months, A question started to hit my mind and I started thinking who would be the first ever Integrity Idol. So, to find the answer to that question, I moved towards Nepal Tourism Board where the event was going to be held.
I reached the venue exactly at 3:30 PM (Nepali Time) and after entering inside of the venue, I saw something amazing. Seats in an Auditorium was already packed, After searching for some minutes I managed to get one seat in the last row of an Auditorium.
Times goes on but the ceremony didn’t start, One guy (probably a host) came at the stage and announced that “Chief guest will be arriving soon and requested all participant to have a cup of Tea, which was kept outside of an Auditorium”.
Most of the participant moved outside for a Tea and I utilized that chance, I garbed one seat in the third row of an Auditorium form where I can see everything happening on the stage.
At 4:13 PM (Nepali Time), two hosts Mr. Suman Parajuli and Ms. Ashmita Sharma started a ceremony officially by playing a Video. They take only some minutes to introduce guest & chief guest and requested all participant to stand up for National Anthem.
I personally found myself feeling so much proud while singing a National Anthem with those National Heroes in the same room.
Right after National Anthem, Host started to introduce all those 5 finalists of an Integrity Idol Nepal 2014 one by one. That finalist where from the different sector and the works are done by them was really amazing and inspiring. CNN Hero 2010 and President of Maiti Nepal, Ms. Anuradha Koirala (My Idol) congratulate all 5 finalists with a flower garland.
After that Mr. Surya Nath Upadhya, former Chief Commissioner of CIAA, who was also a coordinator of Panel of Judges was called on a stage to give a short speech and to announce a winner name of an Integrity Idol Nepal 2014. He told that it was very much difficult for them to choose one National Hero, but public votes make that job easy. By adding some jokes & laughter at his speech, he announced the name of an Integrity Idol Nepal 2014 and the name of the winner was Ms. Gyan Mani Nepal from Education sector. Mr. Narayan Adhikari from Accountability Lab and Mr. Surya Nath Upadhya gave a token of love to all 5 finalists and Chief Guest, Mr. Leela Mani Paudyal, Chief Secretary, Government of Nepal gave the trophy to a winner of an Integrity Idol Nepal 2014.
After trophy and token distribution, Host requests a winner Mr. Gyan Mani Nepal to share his feeling and experience of winning the award with us. Mr. Nepal told that he always love to provide quality service and said that Chief Secretary, Mr. Leela Mani Paudyal was also the source of his inspiration. He shares his dream of improving the education system in the rural villages of Nepal. Must say his speech was really emotional and make me realized that it’s not easy to be a public servant.
Then, Mr. Suman Parajuli called Mr. Leela Mani Poudyal, chief secretary of Nepal Government on stage for his speech. He first congratulates all 5 finalists and told them to try more and more. He also thanked organizer and said this kind of initiatives will add more energy and empowers government officers to do more. “Public taxes are only the source of their salary and they should return 100% of that salary through their work and services” said by him. He also shares his feeling of knowing more about the organizer and told organizer team to share the process of joining their organization.
Last but not the least, Host announced the statistics of public votes received by the winner and called Mr. Narayan Adhikari on stage for the closing speech. Mr. Adhikari said that they will be running the program every year and told everyone to visit accountabilitylab.org if they want to know more the community. He thanked all guest, chief guest and participants for joining them and requested everyone to have a cup of tea once again. “At the end of the program I promise myself that I will not hate Government officers now onwards, All of them are not same”.
